Get Out In Your Garden This Winter

If you like to spend a lot of time in your garden when it’s hot outside, the thought of abandoning  your garden in the winter may seem a little depressing. There are, however, still some ways that you utilize your garden and spend quality time outside even when the weather is looking a little gray.

Upkeep

Don’t let your garden get away from you during the winter time. If you spend a lot of time taking care of it during the summer, you wouldn’t want all of that hard work to go by the wayside.

Every winter there are at least a few days when the weather is a little bit warmer. Take full advantage of any sunny winter days by doing a little garden maintenance and upkeep. This way, you will reap the benefits of fresh air and exercise, as well as keeping your garden well maintained so that you won’t have to work so hard when the summer comes.

Entertaining Friends and Family

You can use your garden to entertain friends and family during the winter time if you install a fire pit or propane heater. Between these and little warm clothing, your backyard can be cozy enough for a fun gathering. Don’t forget to serve up simple, easy hot chocolate or some mulled wine to keep everyone warm.

Your backyard or garden might be even more inviting than your house with the addition of Christmas decorations or some aesthetically pleasing  lights. You may even consider building a gazebo if you have space, ensuring that you won’t have to abandon the party even in the case of foul weather.

With a little creativity you can make the most of your garden during the cold winter nights.

Build A Snowman

Building a snowman with your family is a great way to make use of your yard or garden during the winter. Just get everyone bundled up in their warmest winter clothes and head out to the backyard to start making your own family Frosty.   Building a snowman is sure to make everyone hungry, so after you have played outside, come in to warm up with some hot cocoa.

Grow Plants

You can use the winter to do some gardening so that you can see some results when the spring comes around. Certain plans can survive in winter, such as violets or pansies. These flowers are capable of growing during milder weather.

Another plant you might consider is called winter Jasmine. It has bright yellow flowers that can bring a sense of vibrancy to your garden even  if the weather is foul.  If you can find snowdrops in your local nursery, they can be a great choice for planting during the winter as they are able to start growing even before all the snow has melted, and they will look beautiful in the spring.

If you are an avid gardener and love spending time outside, you don’t have to stop gardening just because the weather is getting colder. Use some of these tips to utilize your garden all year round.
